Before finishing my furniture i always sand up to 220 grit. With the lid in place the poly will remain fresh for a couple days. So the wipe on poly has one disadvantage you need like 10 coats to get the same level of finish as 3 coats standard poly. So keep piling on the coats until you see the finish you want.
