What is the difference between quarter round and shoe molding. The main use for shoe molding is to run along the intersection of the baseboard and floor. This molding is a sleeker look and in our opinion is a more attractive choice because it doesnt give the appearance of having a heavy molding at the bottom of the baseboard. Quarter round molding is typically x with a radius profile but you may be able to find different sized quarter molding. So whats the difference.
There are two types of molding that can be used base shoe or quarter round. Baseboard molding installations are finished off with a small piece of molding that covers the gap between the bottom of the baseboards and the floor. Shoe molding is the small piece of trim at the junction between baseboard and floor. Shoe molding is much the same as quarter round having the same 900 angle on the backside but instead of being a perfect quarter radius its profile is a bit more squat.
Both types of molding are very similar. If youve been looking at baseboard finishing trim youve probably discovered quarter round too. Not all homes have it and its often not used where carpet is the floor covering. Quarter round molding isnt all bad.
In this project i am installing shoe moldings to cover gaps between the hardwood floor and baseboards. The main secret in installing shoe moldings is in cutting. Its an easy installation that costs little and gives your floors a precise polished look. Shoe molding is great for covering gaps between hard surface floors and the baseboard.
Baseboard molding installations are very often finished off with an additional thin piece of molding called quarter round or shoe molding that covers the gap between the bottom of the baseboards and the floor. Instead of leaving abrupt transitions between countertops and surfaces adjoining them or between floors baseboards and walls shoe and quarter round molding make for a smooth and professional looking transition. The other advantage to shoe molding is that it will conform to the slight variations in the floor much easier than a thicker more rigid quarter round. Mitering quarter rounds creating returns.
Base shoe and quarter round are almost identical. Shoe molding and quarter round molding give architectural curve appeal to interior spaces.
