Staining aspen wood. I have read of sealing the wood first with wood conditioner and then using a gel stain. Aspen they penitrate into the wood more evenly. I used a wood conditioner i think it was pre stain wood conditioner made by minwax 4 5quart before staining. Weve been finishing some unfinished aspen furniture yes still.
Some apparently random areas on the surface of the wood drink up a whole lot more color leaving dark blotches. Roughly sanded wood exposes more surface area that allows too much stain to soak into the wood. When you take the time to use progressively finer and finer grit sandpaper that eventually produces a glass like surface you minimize the surface area of the lumber. Ive been doing some staining on pine as of late.
Looking for suggestions as to how to get a good finish with aspens blotchy characteristics. I used some aspen for a project a few years ago and it took stain fairly well. Aspen taking stain unevenly. Wood finishing is an inherently dangerous pursuit.
Aspen is a hardwood and already not porous i will definitely try out the thinned out paint. I just read that aspen does not hold nails very well. Arent the pre stain wood conditioners for softwoods to fill in the pores of the softwood so that the stain will not saturate the wood. Isnt the grain on aspen beautiful.
Aspen doesnt contain resin and has toughness as well as exceptional stiffness. Not really sure why i picked aspen as i knew it would be an issue when it came to staining it.
